What is Being Grounded?
Everyone talks about getting grounded, being grounded, not being grounded, or thinks I have to ground myself. You might ask yourself; do I really understand what on Earth this really means? Why do I even want to be grounded? Do I want to learn this? What good is this mysterious, but often spoken, so-called need? Well, basically, what it means from a spiritual perspective is that your souls, your spiritual self, is fully embodied inside of your body. From an energetic perspective it means that your energetic body inhabits all of your chakras, but most especially your first chakra that is located at the tip of your sacrum and opens downward through your perineum. This chakra allows your energy to be palpably inside of the soles of your feet and legs as well.
Physically Grounded
From a purely physical perspective, being grounded means really feeling yourself standing on the earth beneath your feet. You feel physically deeply weighted on and connected to the planet below you, much like the roots in the picture above. From an emotional one, you feel calm, stable, and solid inside of yourself. You know what your own feelings are, and you can easily distinguish yours from someone else’s. And you don’t tend to lose your temper too much. Once in a while you may lose it, but you’re normally fairly even tempered or even pretty chill and easy going. And, lastly, from a mental one, your mind is more often calm, balanced, neutral, and peaceful than not. If someone isn’t mentally grounded, they may have a tendency towards being nervous, anxious, and vigilant. They can be fast thinkers, fast talkers, and prone to being fearful. Or they could be the kind of person that is quick to lose their temper when their anxiety is triggered.
Still Mind, Peaceful Mind
Some of this might sound familiar or seem pretty obvious to you. And you can easily understand what it means to be grounded. But what may not be so obvious is what I mean when I talk about being spiritually or energetically grounded. So, in today’s blog, I will focus on the subtleties of these two aspects of feeling and being grounded. So, let’s begin with the energy system and what it means to be energetically grounded in the body.
The Chakra System
In my past blog posts, you can read about the Chakra System, which exists inside each and every one of us, and even inside our beloved cats and dogs. In this post, you will learn about how to be grounded inside of your chakra system, and how to work on staying there as much as possible. So, let’s begin. When you are feeling grounded inside of your body energetically and spiritually, you are in touch with all of your body and how it is feeling right down to the soles of your feet. You are able to respond any of your needs easily and quickly. You feel safe, secure, protected and reasonably relaxed. You are able to connect and interact normally with your friends and family and are pretty much at ease in social situations. Your mind is relaxed, your emotions are relatively calm, and you are aware and present to what it is happening around you. You are able to maintain good boundaries with other people and are at home in yourself. Life is good.
Energetically and Spiritually Embodied
A person who is not energetically or spiritually well-grounded inside of their body is the type of person that lives most of their life inside of their head. If you were inside this person’s head, you’d find it actually pretty noisy and overactive in there, and it would be really hard to slow down those endless thoughts. A person who is not grounded in their lower chakras can act a bit spacy, and often seem like they are not fully present in a conversation. They also may not be able to connect to or maintain eye contact for very long with the person they are talking to. When they walk, it’s almost like they are floating above the lower half of their own body. They don’t have great energetic boundaries and pick up on everything other people are feeling, which can be overwhelming and tiring. When someone has thin, energetic boundaries, they can tend to avoid large crowds and be reclusive. They may even have physically cold feet as a result of being ungrounded. These folks can seem a bit ethereal and light, almost like they are floating on air. Sometimes, it can seem as if they are existing outside of their own body, making them seem physically fragile and very vulnerable. They can be very sensitive emotionally and can be quite empathic and psychic as well. They also seem, and may actually be, living half in this world and half in the world of Spirit. If they were only able to drop down spiritually and fully inhabit their lower body as well as their energy system, they would actually feel a lot safer. And they would feel more whole.
Ungrounded
So how does someone who feels ungrounded mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually start to feel grounded? There are a number of things I can recommend that would help, starting with becoming aware of what it feels to be both grounded and ungrounded. This can be accomplished with a simple, guided meditation that allows that meditator to drop down into their body using deep relaxation and breathing techniques. This can enable someone who feels ungrounded to take the time to regain the sense of being safe, secure, and protected. It can help upset emotions to calm down, the anxious mind to still, the tense body to relax, and for the soul to feel safely, physically contained and much less vulnerable. I also highly recommend inhaling Evolve Aromatherapy’s Spiritual Inhaler: Grounding. Aromatherapy as an incredibly helpful and gentle tool to actively encourage the relaxation response while doing deep, low belly breathing and meditation techniques. The synergy of the essential oils in the formula of this angelically channeled inhaler calms the body, mind, heart, and soul thereby enabling you to become more grounded once again.
